Minoa
A strategy game for 2-4 players by Dieter Stein
Material
- hexagonal board
- about 60 black sticks
- 12 red, 12 blue, 8 yellow, and 6 green sticks
Preparation
The board is initially empty. Each player chooses a color and picks the corresponding sticks.
- 2 players take 12 sticks each (red and blue)
- 3 players take 8 sticks each (red, blue, and yellow)
- 4 players take 6 sticks each (red, blue, yellow, and green)
Black sticks belong to all players.
Play
Red begins. Players take turns in clockwise direction.
On their turn, players must choose one of the following options:
- play 1 black stick or
- play 1 stick of their own color
Sticks are placed on the lines of the board and hereby delimit regions. Only one stick may be placed on a line. Sticks already placed may not be moved during the game.
Black sticks may be placed everywhere with the exception of the outer bound of the board. On the other hand, colored sticks may only be placed on the edge.
At the end of the game, each region must have an outer border of a single color and hereby assignable to exactly one of the players.
As soon as a player places their last own stick and only one other player still has colored sticks to play, these remaining sticks are played automatically on all vacant edge lines (disregarding the normal turn order).
End of the game
A game ends, when a player has no more moves left or when all regions are assignable to the players.
At the end of the game each player sums up all triangles of all of their regions.
There are a total of 96 triangles available. The player with the highest score wins the game. Games can end in a draw.
For 4 players
Four players should play a partner game. Players facing each other at the table are partners and add their scores at the end of the game.
During the game, however, the two team players are not allowed to discuss their tactics.
